The picture on the right is a map of the war zone in Gettysburg, where tens of thousands of young men and boys were murdered in a pointless battle. The battle could have been prevented if only the people who were neighbors, friends, and brothers came to an agreement on whether everyone should be treated equal or not. It sounds silly and hard to believe that they couldn't agree on a topic that should have been decided so easily. The north lost about 75% of their troops while the south lost closer to 80% of theirs. The south could not continue to fight due to their lack of supplies and men. They were forced to surrender to the north which all but sealed their fate of losing the war to the troops led by General Grant. It was a loss that the south, led by Gen. Lee, didn't take easily. In the end they signed the treaty agreement that added amendments to the American Constitution, giving the African American people freedom and equal rights to live normal lives and not work as slaves to the white families. The Civil War was not a good war. No war ever is. But the reason why it was fought and the outcome of the war were ultimately beneficial to the United States and the world. It set the new standard for democracy and helped the world in a number of ways by helping our own country.
